National Badminton Championships 2013 – Semi-Finals
Chris Adcock and Gabby White suffered an upset in the English National Badminton semi-finals tonight at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.
The defending champions and second seeds went down 21-17 21-19 to third seeds Marcus Ellis and Alyssa Lim.
In the final they will face top seeds Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, who knocked out fourth seeds Ben Stawski and Lauren Smith 21-15 21-12.
Both Adcock and White made up for their disappointment by reaching the men’s and women’s doubles finals respectively.
But their mixed doubles defeat means new names on the trophy - and there will be a new name on the women’s singles trophy after Warwickshire’s Fontaine Chapman and 2011 runner-up Sarah Walker of Essex booked their final places.
Chapman, who won her quarter-final when five-times champion Elizabeth Cann had to retire with a back injury, beat Panuga Riou in the semi-final 21-14 21-18. But Walker had to battle for 63 minutes – the longest women’s match this weekend and second longest of the Championships – to overcome Yorkshire’s Sarah Milne 21-16 17-21 21-18.
Rajiv Ouseph and Carl Baxter will meet in the men’s singles final for the fifth year running as Ouseph looks to extend his winning sequence to six titles in a row.
Middlesex’s Ouseph overcame Yorkshire’s fifth seed Jamie Bonsels 21-4 21-10 while Kent’s Baxter, who knocked out Surrey second seed Toby Penty in three games in the quarter-finals, toppled the Isle
of Man’s third seed Joshua Green 21-12 21-11.
Baxter is the last player to take a game off Ouseph – in the 2010 final. A new pair will win the women’s doubles. Heather Olver and Mariana Agathangelou, the runners-up for the last three years but never the winners, will meet White and Cumbria’s Lauren Smith in the final.
Smith and White, who has won the last three years with Jenny Wallwork, beat her and Alex Langley in straight games.
The men’s doubles final will feature defending champion Adcock and  partner Marcus Ellis, who was recruited to step in for injured fellow Yorkshireman Andrew Ellis. They beat Ouseph and Baxter in the semi-finals 21-15 21-5 while last year’s runners-up and second seeds Chris Langridge and Peter Mills put an end to young prospects Ryan McCarthy and Tom Wolfenden 21-14 21-7.
The Championships are being staged at the National Cycling Centre for the ninth time in 10 years thanks to the special partnership between BADMINTON England, Manchester City Council and top racket and equipment company Carlton with support from major retailers Central Sports.
