World Number Three James Willstrop Visits Moss Side Leisure Centre
England’s James Willstrop took time out of the National Championships to step on court with members of Moss Side Squash Club

Players from Moss Side Squash Club were treated to a once in a life time opportunity to have a game against world number three and silver Commonwealth Games medallist James Willstrop.
Willstrop currently competing in the 2013 National Squash Championships at Sportcity took time out of his busy schedule to visit the centre ahead of his quarter final match.

The club is a massive success story for the local community, only three years there was almost no squash activity in the centre and now the thriving club based at Moss Side Leisure Centre has gone from strength to strength thanks to support from the Manchester Squash Programme in partnership
with England Squash & Racketball and Manchester City Council.

The world number three showcased his skills to the club and also entertained members with a lively question and answer session.

Club player, Riki Sang said: “Having James Willstrop was great coup and everyone was very proud and honoured to be able to welcome the Fedderer/Messi of our sport there. He's gained a few more supporters now!”

World number three, James Willstrop said: “It’s great to be able to visit local clubs during a tournament and see firsthand the great work they are doing.  Moss Side Squash Club has a fantastic
atmosphere and is clearly a fantastic place to play squash.”

Moss Side Squash Club was created at the centre three years ago now has two men’s and a women’s team playing the local leagues as well as a children’s academy ran by local resident and squash coach Ray Nevin, that identifies talented athletes and gives them the chance to receive top coaching.

There’s even more good news for Moss Side Leisure Centre after successfully being awarded funding to give the squash courts and area a complete refurbishment, including converting a court into a full glass back.  The make-over will help to create more opportunities for local residents and allow the current programme to expand further.
